Isaiah 37 First Chronicles

This is a map between Isaiah chapter 37 and the book of First Chronicles. The key matches are False Gods Burned and Angel. There's also a general match between David's two attempts to bring the ark to Jerusalem and Hezekiah's two visits to the Temple. The first try fails for both, because they asked the wrong guys to do the job. The second try succeeds. This overarching theme is difficult to capture in simple quotations, so the matches titled Round One and Round Two provide explanatory notes.

Round One*

13 Isaiah 37:1-5
37 1And it came to pass, when King Hezekiah heard it, he tore his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of Yahvah.
2And he sent Eliakim, who was steward of the house, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah, the prophet, the son of Amoz.
3And they said to him, Hezekiah says: This is a day of distress and of rebuke and of anger; for the children have come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.
4It may be Yahvah your God will hear the words of the Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to disgrace the living God, and will reprimand him on account of the words which Yahvah your God has heard; therefore beg and pray for the remnant that is left.

5So the servants of King Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

37 First Chronicles 13:1-3
1And David consulted with the commanders of 1,000s and 100s, and with all the leaders and governors of Israel.
2And David said to all the assemblies of Israel, If it seems good to you, let us beg Yahvah our God to repair the breaches of our brothers who reside in all towns of Israel, and settle with them priests and Levites in their cities and suburbs;
3so that they may gather themselves and come to us, and pray before Yahvah our God and beg him because of our sins; for we did not pray before him in the days of Saul.

*Hezekiah goes to the Temple, but sends messengers asking Isaiah to pray. There's no record of Hezekiah praying himself and the result is a pithy response from Isaiah. David sends messengers to gather everyone to help bring the ark of the covenant to the city of David, but they move the ark on a cart pulled by oxen instead of allowing the Levites to carry the ark as God prescribed through Moses, and the mission fails.

Afraid

13 Isaiah 37:6-7
6And Isaiah said to them, Thus you will say to your master: Yahvah says, Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the messengers of the king of Assyria have blasphemed in my presence.
7Look, I will send a blast against him, and he will hear a rumor and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

37 First Chronicles 13:9-12
9And when they came to the threshing floor of Remin, Uzza put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen ran toward the threshing floor.
10And the anger of Yahvah was kindled against Uzza, and he struck him there, because he put forth his hand to the ark; and he died there before the ark.
11And David was displeased because Yahvah had struck Uzza; therefore that place is called Torethadi-Uzza to this day.
12And David was afraid of Yahvah that day saying, How can I bring the ark of God home to me?

Came Out

13 Isaiah 37:8-9
8So the Rabshakeh returned and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.
9And he heard said concerning Tirhakah king of Cush, He has come out to fight with you. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah saying,

37 First Chronicles 14:8-10
8And when the Philistines heard that David was anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up seeking David. And David heard of it, and went out against them.
9And the Philistines came and camped in the valley of giants.
10And David inquired of Yahvah saying, Will I go up against the Philistines? And will you deliver them into my hands? And Yahvah said to him, Go up, for I will deliver them into your hands.

False Gods Burned

13 Isaiah 37:10-20
10Thus you will speak to Hezekiah king of Judah saying, Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you saying, Jerusalem will not be delivered into the hands of the king of Assyria.
11Look, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and will you be delivered?
12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, even Gozan, Haran, Rezeph, the inhabitants of Eden, and them of Bedlassar?
13Where is the king of Hamath and the king of Arphad and the king of the city of Sepharvaim and of Hena and of Ivvah?

14And Hezekiah received the letters from the hand of the messengers and read them; and Hezekiah went up to the house of Yahvah and spread them before Yahvah.
15And Hezekiah prayed before Yahvah saying,
16Yahvah of hosts, God of Israel, who sits above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the land; you have made the skies and land.
17Incline your ear, Yahvah, and hear; open your eyes, Yahvah, and see; and hear the words of Sennacherib, which he has sent to disgrace the living God.
18Of a truth, Yahvah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their lands;
19and have burned their lands and their gods with fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, of wood, of silver, and of stone; therefore they have destroyed them.
20Now Yahvah our God, save us from his hands that all the kingdoms of the land may know that you are the God, even you only.

37 First Chronicles 14:11-17
11So they came up to the valley of Toretha, and David struck them there. Then David said, Yahvah has broken in on my enemies before me like the breaking forth of waters; therefore they called the name of that place the valley of Toretha.
12And when they had left their idols there, David gave a commandment to his mighty men saying, Burn them with fire and scatter their ashes to the wind.

13And the Philistines came up again and camped in the valley of giants.
14Therefore David inquired again of God; and God said to him, You will not go up after them; but turn away from them, and go attack them from the front.
15And it will be, when you hear the sound of howling in the top of the mountain, then you will go out to battle; for Yahvah has gone forth before you to strike the army of the Philistines.
16And David therefore did as Yahvah commanded him; and they struck the army of the Philistines from Gibeon, even to Gezer.
17And the fame of David went out into all lands; and Yahvah brought the fear of him on all the nations.

Round Two*

13 Isaiah 37:21
21Then Isaiah, the prophet, the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah saying, Yahvah of hosts, the God of Israel says: All that you have prayed before me concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria I have heard;

37 First Chronicles 15:13
13so that Yahvah our God may not strike us because we did not seek him after the due order.

*In the second attempt things work out. Hezekiah goes to the temple again, but prays to God himself. The prophet hears from God and gives a long prophetic word that forms the Isaiah side of the next four matches. David tries again to move the ark of the covenant to the city of David, and he consecrates the Levites to carry the ark on poles as God had prescribed. Upon arriving at the prepared location and sacrificing to God David gives a long Psalm that forms the First Chronicles side of the next four matches.

Works

13 Isaiah 37:22-25
22this is the word which Yahvah has spoken concerning him: The virgin, the daughter of Zion, has despised you and laughs you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem wags her head at you.

23Who have you disgraced and blasphemed? And against who have you raised your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel.
24By the hand of your messengers you have disgraced Master, and you have said, By the multitude of my chariots I am come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars, and its choice fir trees; and I will enter into the height of its border, to the forest of Carmel.
25I will dig, and drink water; and with the hoofs of my horses I will dry up all the great rivers.

37 First Chronicles 16:7-14
7Then, on that day, David delivered this psalm, both he and the chiefs of all the priests and the Levites, to praise Yahvah, in the company of Asaph and his brothers.

8Give thanks to Yahvah, call on his name, make known his deeds among the peoples.
9Sing to him, give thanks to him, tell of all his wondrous works.
10Glory in his holy name; let the heart of those who seek Yahvah rejoice.
11Seek Yahvah and his strength, pray before him continually.
12Remember his marvellous works that he has done, his wonders and the judgments of his mouth,
13sons of Abraham his servant, children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14He is Yahvah our God; his laws are in all the land.

Ordained

13 Isaiah 37:26-27
26Have you not heard long ago, how I have done it; and of the days of old, that I have prepared it? Now I have brought it to pass, that you should be laid waste and desolate as when fortified cities are in ruin,
27whose inhabitants were weak, and were defeated and confounded, and became like the grass of the field and the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, as tender blades of wheat blasted before it is grown up.

37 First Chronicles 16:15-19
15Be mindful of his contract forever, the word which he commanded to 1,000 generations,
16even his oath to Abraham and the contract which he made with the sons of Isaac;
17and he has confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting contract,
18saying, To you I will give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance.

19When you were but few, even a few in numbers and strangers in it.

Going Out

13 Isaiah 37:28-29
28I know your conduct and your going out and your coming in and your daring threat in my presence.
29Because you have dared in my presence and your blasphemous words have come up into my ears, therefore I will put a hook in your nose and a bit between your lips, and I will cause you to return by the way by which you came.

37 First Chronicles 16:20-22
20And when you were carried away captive from nation to nation, and from kingdom to another kingdom,
21he did not permit the rulers to harm you, yes, he chastened kings for your sakes,
22saying, Do not touch my anointed ones and do not harm my prophets.

Save

13 Isaiah 37:30-33
30And this will be a sign for you: You will eat this year such as grows of itself; and the 2nd year what springs of the same; and in the 3rd year you will sow and reap and plant vineyards and eat their fruit.
31And the remnant that survives of the house of Judah will again return, and will again take root downward and bear fruit upward;
32for out of Jerusalem will go forth a remnant, and those who escape out of mount Zion; the zeal of Yahvah of hosts will do this.

33Therefore Yahvah says concerning the king of Assyria: He will not enter this city nor shoot an arrow there nor come before it with shields nor cast siege-works against it.

37 First Chronicles 16:23-36
23Sing to Yahvah, all the land; show forth his salvation, from day to day.
24Declare his glory among the nations;
25for great is Yahvah, and greatly to be praised; and he is to be revered above all kings.
26For all the gods of the Gentiles are images; but Yahvah made the skies.
27Glory and majesty are in his presence; strength and greatness are in his sanctuary.
28Give thanks to Yahvah, families of the peoples, give thanks before Yahvah, due to his glory and strength.
29Give thanks to Yahvah with the honor due his name; bring offerings, and give thanks before him with the prayer of your mouth; worship Yahvah with holy songs.
30Tremble before him, all the land; the world will also be stable, that it not be moved.
31Let the skies be glad, and let the land rejoice; and let men say among the nations, Yahvah reigns.
32Let the sea roar and its fullness; let the fields rejoice, and all that is in them.
33Then the trees of the forest will sing praises at the presence of Yahvah, because he comes to judge the land. He will judge the world with justice, and reprimand the peoples in faithfulness;
34also say, Give thanks to Yahvah; for he is good; for his mercy endures forever.
35Save us, Yahvah, save us and gather us together, and bring us back from among the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name, and glory in your praises.
36Blessed be Yahvah God of Israel forever and ever. Then all the people will say, Amen; and with a pleasant and pure mouth, let them praise their God.

Angel

13 Isaiah 37:36-38
36Then the angel of Yahvah went forth and struck in the camp of the Assyrians 185,000: and when the soldiers arose early in the morning, look, their comrades were all dead.
37So Sennacherib departed and went and returned and lived at Nineveh.
38And it came to pass as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god that Adrammeleck and Sharezar, his sons, slew him with the sword; and they escaped to the land of Kardo, and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his place.

37 First Chronicles 21:14-15
14So Yahvah sent pestilence on Israel; and there fell of Israel 75,000 men.
15And Yahvah sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it; and as he was destroying it, Yahvah saw and considered it and averted the disaster, and said to the angel that destroyed, You have destroyed a great many, stay now your hand. And the angel of Yahvah stood by the threshing floor of Aran the Jebusite.
