9 Second Samuel

Joab's March

13 Isaiah 9:1-2
9 1The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali have rejoiced; the mighty dominion, the way by the sea, the country beyond the Jordan River, and Galilee of the Gentiles have rejoiced.
2The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in the land of the shadow of death, on them has the light shined.

Second Samuel 2:29-3:0
29And Abner and his men walked all that night in the desert, and crossed the Jordan, and went toward Bithron, and they came to Mahanaim.
30And Joab returned from following Abner; and when he had gathered all the people together and they were numbered, there were 12 wounded of David's men, and Asahel was dead.
31But the men of David had slain of Benjamin and of Abner, 360 men.
32And they took Asahel and buried him in the sepulcher of his father in Bethlehem. And Joab and his men marched all night, and the day dawned on them at Hebron.

David's Kids

13 Isaiah 9:3
3You have multiplied the people, and you have increased its joy; they joy before you as those who rejoice in the harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Second Samuel 3:2-5
2And sons were born to David in Hebron; and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess;
3and his 2nd, Kileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the 3rd, Absalom, the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai, king of Geshur;
4and the 4th, Adonijah, the son of Haggith; and the 5th, Shephatiah, the son of Abital;
5and the 6th, Ithream, by David's wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron.

Abner Makes Peace

13 Isaiah 9:4
4For you have broken the yoke of his burden and the staff of his shoulder and the rod of his oppressor, as in the days of Midian.

Second Samuel 3:17-21
17And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel saying, You have sought for David in times past to be king over you;
18now then do so; for Yahvah has spoken of David saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and out of the hand of all their enemies.
19And Abner also spoke in the presence of the Benjamites; and Abner also went to speak in the presence of David in Hebron. And when it seemed good in the sight of all Israel and in the sight of the whole house of Benjamin,
20then Abner came to David at Hebron, and 20 men with him. And David made Abner and the men who were with him a great feast.
21And Abner said to David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel to my master the king, that they may make a contract with you and that you may reign over all that your soul desires. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace.

Joab Murders Abner

13 Isaiah 9:5
5For every voice which is heard brings terror and garments rolled in blood; but this will be for burning and fuel for fire.

Second Samuel 3:26-30
26And when Joab came out from the presence of David, he sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the well of Sirah; but David did not know it.
27And when Abner had returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside to a secret place inside the gate to speak with him quietly, and he struck him there in his abdomen, and he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.
28And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before Yahvah forever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner;
29let it rest on the head of Joab and on the head of all his father's house; and let there never fail to be in the house of Joab one who has a discharge or who is a leper or who is a beggar holding a bowl or who falls by the sword or who lacks bread.
30So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle.

David's Covenant

13 Isaiah 9:6-7
6For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government will be on his shoulder; and his name is called wonderful counsellor, the mighty one, the everlasting god, the prince of peace.
7Of the increase of his government and of his peace there will not be an end, on the throne of David and on his kingdom, to establish it and to sustain it with justice and with righteousness from now on, even forever. The zeal of Yahvah of hosts will perform this.

Second Samuel 7:12-16
12And when your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who will come out of your loins, and I will establish his kingdom.
13He will build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
14I will be like a father to him and he will be like a son to me. If he commit folly, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the sons of men;
15but my mercy I will not take from him, as I took it from Saul who was king before you, and whom I put away from before me.
16And your house and your kingdom will be established forever before me; your throne will be established forever.
