Second John - Second Timothy

Second John ends planning a visit and Second Timothy begins remembering a visit.

Visit

In Second John the elder desires to talk in person with the lady. In part he desires the visit to bring joy. Then, in Second Timothy, Paul writes how the memory of an earlier visit brings him joy.

48 Second John :12
12I have many things to say to you which I do not want to write with paper and ink; but I trust to come to you and speak face to face, that our joy may be full.

49 Second Timothy 1:4
4I am anxious to see you and I still remember your tears; I am filled with joy,

Sons

Another theme between Second John and Second Timothy is that of sons walking in the truth. The elder tells the lady in Second John that he is happy some of her sons are walking in the truth. Then, in Second Timothy, Paul rehearses Timothy's personal history of faith living in his grandmother and mother prior to him, but now also in Timothy.

48 Second John :4
4I rejoiced greatly that I found some of your sons living in the truth, as we have received a commandment from the father.

49 Second Timothy 1:4-5
4I am anxious to see you and I still remember your tears; I am filled with joy,
5especially when I am reminded of your true faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure now in you also.

The contrast of who or what is "in" is fun. In Second John the sons are living in the truth and in Second Timothy faith is living in Timothy.

Jesus Came

Another theme between Second John and Second Timothy is the coming of Jesus to earth as a baby. The core issue in Second John is that the lady is not supposed to allow anyone into the house who rejects that Jesus came in the flesh. In Second Timothy Paul passes the test of whether he would be allowed through the door.

48 Second John :7-11
7For many deceivers have appeared in the world, who do not acknowledge that Jesus, an anointed, has come in the flesh. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8Look to yourselves, that you do not lose those things which you have accomplished, but that you receive a full reward.
9Whoever transgresses and does not stay in the teaching of anointing, does not have god. He who stays in this doctrine, has both the father and the son.
10If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not welcome him to your house, nor ask him to eat;
11for he who bids him to eat is partaker of his evil works.

49 Second Timothy 1:8-11
8Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of master, nor of me his prisoner; but bear the hardships that go along with the preaching of the gospel through the power of god,
9who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own will and his grace, which was given us in Jesus, an anointed, before the world began,
10and is now made manifest by the appearing of our savior, Jesus, an anointed, who has abolished death, and has revealed life and immortality through the gospel,
11to which I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
